I amworking with ORA 8i.

For performance reasons (dropping users takes way too long) i tried to copy an empty database over the existing one and then restoring a dump in the empty database.

Forthis database i always get the error 1033 database shutdown or startup is in process.  when checking the services, the db-instance is running as well as the agent and the listener.  When i start/stop the instance manually i keep getting this message.

When putting the zip back it works perfectly.

Can anyone tell me what else i need to copy?

Hi,
its not very clear about whats going on here. Are you shutting down the instance when overwriting the datafiles from an empty database ? Why not remove the files(controlfiles, redolog files, datafiles, tempfiles etc) cleanly and copy the new empty database files(including the controlfile).
When are you getting the error ?
